Shane McClellan (aged 16, and white) was attacked and tortured for four hours recently, while his attackers shouted racial slurs and referenced slavery.
Certainly the number of racially-motivated attacks on white people has historically been much smaller than attacks on minorities. The question then, is this: can white people be the victims of hate crime in the same way that minorities can? Can (or should) the law be applied in this way? Ostensibly, these laws are created to protect minorities. Should this particular crime be prosecuted as a hate crime (with severely increased penalties) or as a simple assault?
